Hunting Tips | Muzzleloaders

Keep water out of your barrel

This is another way to keep your powder dry. Try slipping a small latex balloon over the muzzle of your muzzleloader. Tape may come off too easy, and with a balloon you don't get an adhesive residue on your gun.

Keep your muzzleloader clean

If you shoot your muzzleloader, it is very important to clean your barrel at the end of the day. Black powder residue is very corrosive and it will ruin your barrel. If you keep your muzzleloader clean you will have a more accurate shot when the big one comes out.

Keep your powder dry

We have all heard the saying "keep your powder dry". Keep the powder dry in wet weather by putting a piece of scotch tape over the end of your barrel. The tape will keep water out of your barrel and when you shoot the escaping gases will blow the tape off before the bullet gets there. This will not affect your accuracy.

Keeping your percussion cap dry

When the humidity is high or it is drizzling rain, a sure-fire way to keep your percussion cap dry is to run a bead around it and the nipple and the bottom of the cap with finger nail polish. The finger nail polish will seal off the gap between the cap and the nipple preventing moisture from wetting the percussion cam and your powder. The finger nail polish will disintegrate when the weapon is fired.
