Many inexperienced hunters think that hunting with a knife is very risky and this makes the choice of a good knife very difficult for them. For this reason they do not consider the possibility of hunting with one.
However, if you are planning to be a great hunter, you first need to know all about your hunting skills and strengths, to keep them in mind in the future and, depending on each hunt, to change your strategies and tactics according to the season, the animal and the weapon.
First issue: Type of Knife.
First, it is important to know that there are 2 different types of knifes that you need to recognize, the fixed blade knife and the folding or lock blade knife. Both types have their own characteristics and advantages, depending on what you want to hunt. The fixed Blade knife is designed to permanently remain fixed in the open position, and thanks to it, the blade's material runs through the center of the handle and is considered stronger than folding knives. But be careful; since the fixed knives are always in the "open" position it is more dangerous to handle. Lock blade and folding blade knives are more reliable in this aspect.
If you are an occasional hunter, Folding knives are excellent for you in the same way as a knife for everyday use. These knives are perfect for keeping in a small sheath at the belt.
Second issue: The blade's design.
There are many different types of blades. Your choice will depend on your personal style of hunting. The drop point, clip point and skinning designs are the principal aspects of the hunting blade's designs.
If you are planning to use your knives for tedious tasks like caping out a trophy head, the clip point blade is the most suitable for this thanks to its design, which is perfect to get into smaller areas. However, these knives are not practical if you intend to bulk-skin a larger animal. For this the better option is the Drop point blade, featuring a special design for field cleaning tasks like gutting and the splitting of the rib cage and pelvis.
